What Is the Pioneer Arms Hellpup?
The Hellpup is a semi-automatic AK pistol made by Pioneer Arms in Radom, Poland, in buildings that once belonged to the Polish military arsenal. Each Pioneer Arms Hellpup is built on licensed Kalashnikov blueprints with a forged front trunnion, a chrome-moly barrel threaded 14×1 left-hand, and the traditional AK side rail for optics. Chambered in 7.62×39 and fed from standard AK magazines, the Hellpup AK gives you real AK reliability in a package that is easier to store, carry and shoot than a full rifle.
Owners like it because it delivers a lot of gun for the money. It costs less than most imported AK pistols, it is built in a European factory with real military heritage, and it comes in more configurations than almost any other AK pistol on the market.
Hellpup vs Micro Hellpup
The full-size Hellpup uses an 11.73-inch barrel. That extra length gives you more velocity, a longer sight radius and a little less muzzle blast. The Micro Hellpup cuts the barrel to 7 inches and adds a Krinkov-style or booster-style muzzle device, making it the smallest AK pistol Pioneer Arms builds. If you want a compact AK for a vehicle or a range bag, choose the micro Hellpup. If you want the most balanced shooting experience, choose the full-size model.
| Feature | Hellpup | Micro Hellpup |
|---|---|---|
| Barrel length | 11.73″ | 7″ |
| Caliber | 7.62×39 | 7.62×39 |
| Furniture options | Wood, Polish Red, polymer, UTG M-LOK | Wood, Polish Red, aluminum quad rail |
| Brace-ready PRO version | Yes | Yes |
| Best for | All-round shooting, ranch and truck | Maximum compactness |
Hellpup vs Draco: Which AK Pistol Is Better?
Shoppers searching for a Hellpup Draco comparison usually want to know which AK pistol is the better buy for their needs and budget. The Draco is made in Cugir, Romania and imported by Century Arms, while its Polish rival is built in Radom by Pioneer Arms. Both fire 7.62×39 and both are proven designs. The Hellpup stands out with its brace-ready PRO models, factory-braced packages, Polish laminated wood and a wider choice of finishes. The Draco is known for its slim, light profile. If you want a factory brace option or a 1913 Picatinny rear trunnion straight from the box, the Polish pistol is the easier choice. Read our full Hellpup vs Draco guide on the blog.
Choose Your Hellpup Configuration: CORE, PRO or Braced
- CORE / standard: traditional rear trunnion, the lightest and most affordable option.
- PRO: adds a 1913 Picatinny rail on the rear trunnion so you can attach a pistol brace with no adapters.
- Braced packages: ship with an SB Tactical AKTF side-folding brace or SOB47 brace already included.
Every configuration is available in several finishes, including the Polish Red collection with red laminated wood and a red pistol grip, classic oil-varnished wood, black polymer and the Micro Hellpup quad rail.

Choosing the Right 7.62×39 AK Pistol
Start with size. A shorter barrel is easier to store and maneuver, while a longer barrel gives more velocity and less blast. Next, think about accessories. If you plan to run a red dot, weapon light and vertical grip, a quad rail or M-LOK handguard saves you time and money. If you prefer a traditional look, laminated wood with a gas tube rail lets you add an optic without changing the classic profile.
Then decide on rear support. A traditional rear trunnion keeps the pistol light and simple. A Picatinny rear trunnion lets you add a brace later, and a factory-braced package gives you everything in one box. Finally, set your budget. Prices on our site range from about $725 to $900, and every model includes two 30-round magazines.
Caring for Your AK Pistol
AK-pattern firearms are famous for running dirty, but a little care goes a long way. Clean the bore and chamber after each range trip, wipe down the bolt carrier and apply a light coat of oil to the rails. If you shoot corrosive surplus ammunition, flush the barrel, gas piston and gas tube with hot soapy water or a dedicated solvent the same day, then dry and oil every part. Store your pistol in a dry place, ideally in a safe with a dehumidifier, and check that laminated wood stays away from heat sources.
Know the Laws Before You Order
Federal law requires that a licensed dealer handle the transfer and that handgun buyers be at least 21 years old. Some states and cities restrict AK-pattern pistols, threaded barrels or magazines that hold more than 10 rounds. Rules for pistol braces have also changed several times in recent years. Before you order, check your state and local laws or ask your FFL dealer. We cannot ship to locations where a model is prohibited.
Popular Upgrades for Your AK Pistol
Most owners add a few accessories within the first month. A compact red dot sight is the most popular upgrade because it makes fast, accurate shots easy with both eyes open. Mount it on the side rail with a quality AK side mount, or on the gas tube rail found on several models. A weapon light is the next essential if the pistol will serve a home-defense role. Choose a light with at least 500 lumens and a pressure switch you can reach without shifting your grip.
Extra magazines are always a smart buy. Polymer magazines are light and affordable, while steel magazines are nearly indestructible. A single-point or two-point sling keeps the pistol close and helps stabilize it when you shoot. Many shooters also try a different muzzle device. The 14×1 left-hand threads accept a wide range of brakes, compensators and flash hiders, so you can tune recoil and flash to your taste.
If your model is brace ready, you can mount a compatible pistol brace on the Picatinny rear trunnion. Look for a brace that folds, so the pistol stays compact in storage. Whatever you add, test it at the range before relying on it, and keep a log of the rounds you fire so you know when to replace springs and other wear parts.
